2/22 is National Ninja Day in Japan, and Tokyo has the perfect spot where you can experience a little bit of the furtive life of feudal Japan’s very own covert agents.
Ninja Museum of Igaryu is located in Ueno Marunouchi, and boasts the Iga-ryu Ninja House as one of its main attractions. This ninja house was a real ninja house packed with the usual traps and fake hallways to protect top-secret explosive production technology from enemies. Although it looks like a simple farmhouse, inside are escape routes, hidden doors, places to hide swords, and other traps and trickery.
Visitors to the Iga-ryu Ninja House are given a tour of the inside, a kuno (female ninja) guiding them along the way. Tours are conducted in either Japanese or English, and it looks like they get quite a lot of tourists from overseas.
Aside from the ninja house, you can also watch special ninja shows and enjoy other areas where you’ll be able to learn more about the history, strategies, and even secret codes of the ninjas. And if that’s not enough, their museum shop sells original ninja goods that can’t be found anywhere else, including ninja tools, clothing, and other rare items!
