Japan’s food samples are known to be found in places other than restaurant display windows — you might see them inside someone’s jewelry box, or as artwork that add a whole new layer of uniqueness to the already extraordinary plastic crafts.

But if you’re looking for something a little bit more practical (not that we wouldn’t want a giant plate of sashimi hanging around our necks), these food sample bookmarks from Tokyo Kitsch might be more up your alley.

All handmade by food sample craftsmen from Sugamo, Tokyo, these food samples are more than just works to admire — they’ll keep your place in your favorite book, school textbooks, or beloved journals. They’ll probably work up your appetite, too.

The food sample bookmarks start at 1,620 yen (14.53 USD), and range from about 2-5mm in thickness, making them flat enough to prevent your books from looking like they actually have a piece of food hidden in-between the pages.

The bookmarks come in 8 different versions:

Salmon

Don’t let the appearance of these bookmarks fool you. Though they may look three-dimensional, they have a flat, smooth surface, and won’t leave any unwanted imprints on your pages.

If you’re not much of a bookwork, you can pay an extra 100 yen (0.90 USD) and exchange the ribbon for a keyring.

Unfortunately, most of these bookmarks are currently sold out. That’s not to say you’ll have to give up on having your own piece of salmon or watermelon inside your books forever — they are in the process of restocking many of their items (in massive quantities, we hope).

You’ll probably want to make sure you’re not hungry when you use them, though. Otherwise, these super realistic food sample bookmarks will be more of a distraction than an innocent page marker.

Stop by their online store to see which ones are available now!
