People have paid tribute to Hayao Miyazaki in many ways, and French illustrator Pauline Renard recently came up with a brilliant way to combine Miyazaki’s beloved animations with a classic pastime.
Inspired by the films, Renard began the project Miyazaki Cards as a way to pay tribute to the Studio Ghibli legacy.
Characters on the playing cards include those from Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky.
Each of the cards feature a Ghibli character, but the face cards have illustrations that reveal the double identities of some. For example, Haku from Spirited Away is also illustrated as a dragon, while Howl can be seen as the large feathered beast he is capable of transforming into.
Even though we wished they were, Renard’s playing cards are unfortunately not for sale — since the characters are all property of Miyazaki, she doesn’t have the legal rights to sell them.
If we could make them for ourselves we totally would, but since we can’t, we’re happy just knowing these beautiful cards exist.
