While many kids are content with Santa Claus simply leaving presents for them to open on Christmas Day, others are determined to catch the jolly old man himself. Feeling especially enthusiastic before the big day, Japanese Twitter user @mohikan1974's children Nagomi and Kazutoyo prepared for the 2016 holidays with an elaborate, foolproof, and relentlessly painful trap to capture their beloved Santa.
They first began with a hand drawn blueprint for their ingenious Santa Trap:

The carefully thought out contraption consisted of three separate traps — a string of bells to notify them of Santa's arrival, a carpet of legos and nails to incapacitate their special guest, and a snare trap to catch him.
With just a little bit of help from their parents, Nagomi and Kazutoyo went to the store to gather some materials and get down to work. As the masterminds of the Santa Trap, their parents left them to figure most of the structural issues out, watching as they grabbed thick ropes off the shelves and discussed how to create a trap that would sufficiently hold the weight of their target.

After some contemplation, the kids decided to replace the carpet of nails (since they already had a sea of legos for Santa to step on) with a new trap that would supposedly persuade Santa to stay and relax at their house before continuing his rounds.
But from the looks of their drawing, it was far from calm-inducing...

Regardless, Nagomi and Kazutoyo went straight to work.

The next morning, Nagomi and Kazutoyo woke up to see not Santa Claus, but a room filled with delightful treats for Christmas. It was clear that Santa was one step ahead, turning the merciless trap into something truly festive.
Santa replaced the bells, legos, and bouncy balls with presents, candy, and Christmas messages.

He even left a thank you note, and two presents for each of them!

Though their plan to capture Santa proved unsuccessful, @mohikan1974's kids were ecstatic with everything he left them. But considering their steadfast efforts in building the various traps, it's more than likely that they'll come up with something even more complex and foolproof next year.
