Despite places like Kyoto's picturesque Golden Pavillion and the dizzying Shibuya crosswalk that have now become standard travel destinations for visitors, there are hidden gems throughout the country that are still yet to be widely discovered by both foreign and local tourists. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Tokyo city life, there are thousands of areas that boast entire landscapes of pristine nature, as well as other tranquil locations that make it possible to take a step back from reality and breathe.
The six prefectures that make up Japan's Tōhoku region — Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi, and Yamagata — is a treasure box of such serene natural beauty. Though well-known for its long, harsh winters, there are exquisite travel spots in this large region of northern Japan that are well worth the effort to visit. But it also turns out that autumn is an especially ideal time of year for travelers, as Japanese filmmaker Yuki Eikawa shows in a beautifully compiled 4K video of Tōhoku.
