It’s a common dream for Japanese history buffs to want to display an authentic katana in their homes, but as many are also aware, traditional Japanese swords can easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (not to mention they’re extremely dangerous). Perhaps it’s the inability to get ahold of these highly coveted relics of history that has made the Katana Paper Knives crowdfunding project a huge success on its very first day.

Faithfully recreating the beloved swords of famous Japanese warriors, the project offers miniature swords of Hijikata Toshizō, Sakamoto Ryōma, and Oda Nobunaga as beautiful paper knives. Much smaller than real swords but possessing meticulously crafted blades, they’ll cut through paper and envelopes with astonishing ease.

The paper knives are made in Seki City of Gifu Prefecture, an area known for producing high-quality cutlery and edged tools. Each is completed by the hands of an experienced craftsman, ensuring that the katana paper knives cut as smoothly as the real thing.

These miniature swords are also great to just display at home. They come with a designated sheath and stand, and are engraved with a crest at the blade so they’ll look regal even when they’re not being used. Available for 3,400 yen (US$30), contributions can be made via the project’s crowdfunding page.
