Fans of the iconic in-your-face anime series FLCL rejoiced when it was announced that animation studio Production I.G. would be making two new six-episode seasons of the show in a co-production with Toonami. At Anime Expo 2017, fans got another reason to get excited as Production I.G. unveiled a new trailer for the sequel to the classic anime.

Returning to create songs for the two installments is Japanese rock band, The Pillows, who were responsible for the original show's memorable soundtrack, with vocalist Sayaka Yamanaka saying "If a different band did the music, we would refuse to watch the new seasons out of jealousy!"

The second and third installments will get a theatrical release in Japan in 2018 according to Natalie, but plans are for seasons 2 and 3 to be released as two six-episode television series in the U.S. in 2018. Along with the announced staff in the trailer, original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will be returning, and original director and series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki will return in a supervisor roll as Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) directs.

Here is Adult Swim's synopsis for the second installment.

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock. But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
