Several Japanese aquariums structure their facilities as a lead-up to one big star-attraction tank, with several different types of sea creatures swimming along with each other in relative harmony. While we imagine a fair amount of research and care is put into making sure hostility or personality conflict doesn't arise when preparing these tanks, there are certain variables that simply can't be prevented.
Recently, a Japanese Twitter user captured this surprising scene at the Hakkeijima Sea Paradise aquarium and sea-themed amusement park in Yokohama. Her caption of "I was stunned when I saw this stingray prey upon a squid in the exhibit at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise...so scary!" was no doubt echoed by other aquarium guests as they looked on at the inky explosion!
Without any context, the swirling void of darkness and faceless shape of the stingray chomping away looks like something out of a horror movie, but as creeped out as guests appeared to be, perhaps they can appreciate seeing a normal occurrence in wildlife in a not-so-normal habitat, even if it is a bit messy.
