Do you remember the movie Cable Guy? It's an old one, but something of a cult classic. Starring Matthew Broderick and Jim Carrey, it tells the story of a cable guy, Carrey, who installs illegal cable for Broderick, a customer—it was still the 90s. Carrey’s character mistakes this as an invitation to become friends, and Broderick begrudgingly placates for a period. However, it soon becomes clear that Carrey has boundary issues. After a series of startling behavior, Broderick is creeped out and forced to cut ties. This only makes matters worse.
While nowhere near as dramatic, similar situations sometimes occur between teachers and students. A former educator, now and again, some of my students would cross the bounds of professionalism. Although mostly harmless, it was occasionally concerning.
The worst I experienced was an older student who repeatedly waited for me at a nearby station. She started this after her term ended. She had memorized my schedule, had something in mind, and apparently really wanted to meet again. Before this, despite being married, she had given me extravagant gifts and pressured me to go on a date with her. Fortunately, I got wind of what she was doing and took another route home. I can only imagine how shocked Sou's mother must have been when she walked into that room for tea. If it were me, I'd turn around, walk right out, and cut ties forever. Forget paying back the 5000 JPY.
That said, I can't help but feel a little sad for Aki's mother. Some people lack social skills and have a hard time making friends. A simple-minded approach to this problem might be to "buy friends" and "imitate" their interests. However, one can obviously take this too far.
If you liked this manga, you can find much more on Shibatama’s Instagram page. The illustrator also has books available on Amazon. Check them out.
