One aspect of Halloween which has been fully embraced by Japan is the ‘treat’ tradition of the scary holiday. The country’s obsession with kawaii sweets only gets more intense as Halloween season comes into play, and plenty of confectioners get into the spirit of things with their own version of spooky sweets.

There’s plenty of awesome themes being explored this year, such as ‘Monster Harvest’ at Krispy Kreme or an afternoon tea featuring Sanrio Characters. But one Nagoya restaurant has a treat for lovers of Snow White. By putting a dark twist on the classic fairytale, they’ve created the perfect spooky aesthetic for a Halloween themed afternoon tea.

The theme has been devised from the viewpoint of the antagonist of the story, the evil queen, who is obsessed with beauty. The colour scheme is purple, red, and brown, some perfect autumn colours to express the eerie storyline.

The desserts even have motifs from the story itself. The infamous poison apple has been recreated in mousse for example.

And there’s chocolate lipsticks to express the queen’s dangerous fixation.

This ‘Dark Princess Afternoon Tea’ course includes soup, a savoury dish and scone plate, as well as the tiered stand of the various witchy desserts, plus all-you-can-drink tea and coffee.

This twisted fairytale takeover can be found at the New York Lounge restaurant, located in The Strings Hotel Nagoya until 8th November. The course will set you back 3000 yen on weekday and 3450 yen at the weekend or on national holidays (prices don't include tax). If it sounds exactly like your cup of creepy afternoon tea, reservations can be made online.
