Tsukuru-san is one Japanese craftsman that exemplifies the notion that good craftsmanship knows no medium. He gained popularity by recreating weapons from popular anime and manga series while using a common material that most of us have at home: cardboard.
On his Youtube channel, “Crafty Transformer - Cardboard DIY”, Tsukuru-san has uploaded over 70 videos where he shows us his process for each fictional weapon. Some cardboard creations even have moving parts to imitate how they appear in the series, such as the Dominator from Psycho-Pass, or the Fueguchi One from Tokyo Ghoul.
One iconic weapon that recently made its way to Tsukuru-san's Youtube channel is the katana wielded by Tanjiro Kamado, the protagonist of one of the most popular shōnen manga series in Japan right now, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
You can watch the entire process for recreating the katana in cardboard below.
Other than the detail and effort he puts into making sure that his creations honor the original weapons, one trait that Tsukuru-san aims for is the reproducibility of his work. He provides links to free templates that anyone can use in the description of his Youtube videos.
The Demon Slayer katana even includes a link to the type of cardboard he used for the project, so there's really no reason not to unleash your inner Tsukuru-san and give it a try yourself.
