Osaka-based Universal Studios Japan originally intended to open the highly anticipated Super Nintendo World area of their park in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but initial plans were put on hold as a countermeasure against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The park then teased a new opening date of February 4th for the special area dedicated to recreating the world of Nintendo, even with delicious Mario-themed food and a number of exciting Nintendo video game inspired attractions. That opening date, too, was canceled after a state of emergency was declared in Osaka.
Universal Studios of Japan seems to finally have some good news for fans looking to explore and interact with their very own Nintendo theme park, as they've announced a new official March 18th opening date of Super Nintendo World.
USJ emphasizes that the new opening will place a high priority on hygiene and safety, with a number of measures supervised by health officials implemented to help with crowd control and safe social distancing.
The park, which was overseen by by Nintendo staff and Shigeru Miyamoto himself, has a large scale replication of Bowser's Castle as one of its centerpieces, and two of its main opening attractions are "Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge" and "Yoshi's Adventures", which provide guests with a real life AR-powered Mario Kart race and a Yoshi-themed treasure hunt
Guests can also acquire character-themed Power-Up Bands to collect coins, items, and clear challenges such as a boss battle against Bowser Jr as well as strike real-life interactive "?" blocks.
