"Crust" isn't exactly the first word that leaps to mind when thinking of enjoying your next refreshing beer, but one company Japan hopes it can become that in their efforts to combat the problem of food waste.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the average Japanese person in 2017 wasted was person in 2017 was about 48 kg or 106 lbs, and now yearly amounts to roughly 6.12 million tons per year. As a result, a number of companies have started an initiative to find uses for perfectly good food that end up being discarded.
Crust Japan (of Singapore) is one such manufacturer, and their crowdfunded effort to release "Crust Pilsner", a beer made from discarded bread despite being perfectly edible, is their contribution to the effort.
Crust Pilsner is described as having a rich aroma and light savory aftertaste using fresh water from the Japanese Alps.
The project is currently undertaking crowdfunding on Japanese website Makuake.
