Oysters are a popular winter delicacy in Japan (and sometimes may provide some extra seafood surprises), so it's not uncommon to find some of the best batches on display at fish and supermarkets.
What is uncommon, however, is the type of oyster Japanese Twitter user @MitsuPongPong encountered on a recent trip to the supermarket.
MitsuPongPong shared a photo of an oyster sold under the name "Monster of the Reiwa era" (Reiwa is the current era of Japan's official calendar) that has wowed many online not only with their size, but their surprising price as well.

Pictured in the photo is the hand of MitsuPongPong's 5-year-old child, but even still the oyster is so humongous it lives up to its intimidating name. Almost as surprising as the size is the price of the oyster, which clocks in at a meager 450 yen ($3.94)! Naturally, MitsuPongPong says they threw the oyster into their basket without thinking.
Many left comments dumbfounded by the size and price of the monstrous oyster.
"It's a monster..."
"450 yen for an oyster of this size? So cheap!"
"So this is the rumored "Monster of Reiwa"? I'd love to try it."
"I'd like to try it just once. ・The "monster of Reiwa"...I'm sure it would best be eaten raw!"
As for MitsuPongPong, they said they enjoyed the oyster by serving it raw and cutting it up into more manageable pieces, and that the flavor was similar to normal pacific oysters but quite a bit richer. It's a good thing they didn't try to shoot it!
