When you're a parent, there are times when an unexpected comment from your child can put you on the edge of your seat.
A writer at our sister site Grape is raising a five-year-old son. Just the other day, she had a very awkward moment that made her feel as if time had stopped.
When you're asked: "How old are you?"...
On the way home after picking up her son from daycare, the writer and her son passed a middle-aged woman who lived in their neighborhood.
They stopped and greeted each other. Then, the woman turned toward the writer's son and asked, "How old are you?"
Her son perked up and answered her question perfectly in a cheerful tone: "I am five years old!" However, what she didn't expect was his follow-up question:
"How old are you?"
Actual photo of the writer's son
The writer couldn't believe her son had asked the woman the same question in return!
She probably never expected to be asked her age, and by a 5-year-old child, no less. For a moment, a puzzled look appeared on her face, and an indescribable mood took over as she was visibly pondering how to respond...
After what seemed like an eternity but was in fact only a few seconds, the woman deftly dodged the question by replying: "My daughter is 20 years old."
The writer says her son loves to talk. She often tells him, "It's good to talk about yourself, but try to listen to what your friends have to say as well."
In this case, however, this took an unexpected turn and resulted in an embarrassing situation for grown-ups.
