Most of us probably know people like this. They're Mr. or Ms. Congeniality in public, whether with classmates or with coworkers, never a wrinkled brow on their face or a stern look in their eyes.
But can you really be certain that their personality is genuine? Of course, many of us have public facades, there's no arguing that. However, in a society such as Japan where preserving harmony is highly valued, there is a lot of pressure to maintain a happy demeanor, pressure which many are impatient to relieve as soon as it's no longer required.
This was the inspiration for a simple but effective three-cell panel by Himeyuri, author of the manga "Zannen Danshi" published on Pixiv, together with the following caption: "Women who switch off too quickly":
In the first cell, the woman on the left says: "See you," to which the woman on the right replies: "I had fun. See you..." The kanji 素 (su) in the final cell means "natural state."
0.0779 seconds from "on" to "off". Guinness Records will be contacting her shortly...
Here are a few reactions from fellow Twitter users:
-- "I might be this type too lol. As soon as I finish talking to someone, I go back to my serious face."
-- "That's me! lol"
-- "I thought that was just normal..."
-- "I'm this type too so I can really relate lol. I'm just guessing but I'd say women like this turn "on" very quickly as well!"
-- "I sometimes realize I'm doing this ... but I have no intention of improving."
--- "There are guys like this too."
Does this look familiar? The only disadvantage of having such a glum "off" face is that someone you know may catch sight of it when you're least expecting it.
