Anime characters taking up promotional duties in Japan isn't exactly a new concept, as Luffy, Naruto, Goku, and others were officially named ambassadors for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but Miyagi prefecture may be upping the ante with their new recruit. Miyagi has formally introduced Pokémon's Lapras as a tourism ambassador in order to help encourage travelers to visit as the area recovers from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Yoshihiro Murai, Miyagi Governor, introduced the popular Pokémon on stage. While Lapras was eager to meet with fans, the aquatic mascot had to carefully waddle through doorways.
It's not just a formality by the way, starting on July 21st Lapras-themed pedal boats will be available at Michinoku Park in Miyagi, and the Hanayama Aoshonen Ryokoumura campings grounds from August 3rd. Public pools in the area will also be dishing out Lapras pool toys for free use.
