Japan’s new canned creamy shortcakes turn heads for sweet lovers
Onigiri, or rice balls, are one of Japan's most popular snacks. Available in a variety of flavors (such as pickled plum, fried chicken, salmon, and the ever popular tuna mayonnaise) that can either provide a quick bite on the go or even a light meal, it seems that the convenience store always has a rice ball for every situation--except for dessert. Tokyo's newly opened OMUSUBI Cake looks to be changing that, however, with their new cake onigiri!
OMUSUBI Cake actually first opened up in Osaka in August, but after becoming a hit among sweets fan has now opened up its first store in Tokyo. As the image below shows, the rice ball cakes mimic the appearance of the standard onigiri you find in Japanese convenience stores, right down to the triangular shape and 1-2-3 step wrapping. Of course, these are cakes, so the inside is completely different.
The standard seaweed wrapping is replaced by a crepe made with black cocoa, and sponge cake and flavored cream are used to make up the rice portion. Cookies and pie bits are also blended into the cake to add some crunchy texture.
The rice ball cakes are available in 9 flavors: Cookies & Cream, Mont Blanc, Tiramisu, Cheesecake, Earl Gray, Grapefruit, Green Tea, Chocolate, and Strawberry, each priced at 432 yen.
Unfortunately, the dessert cake onigiri are only on sale for a a short time (November 18-December 12, 2019), so those in Tokyo looking to try out the sweetest of rice balls will want to take advantage. Hopefully their popularity helps launch a permanent store in Tokyo. Dedicated rice ball fans may even consider washing it down with a drinkable onigiri.
