The New Year, or oshogatsu, is the central holiday period of the Japanese calendar and is well on its way. For the 2020 festivities, Disney Stores in Japan are letting fans ring in the New Year with their “Eto Disney 2020” series of Disney character-themed traditional Japanese New Year decorations.
The New Year-motif lineup of Disney goods takes inspiration from a number of traditional decorations found in households and businesses during the Japanese New Year, including daruma--round traditional Japanese dolls used as talismans for good fortune--modeled after Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, (2,000 yen) Chip, and Dale (1,200 yen).
Winnie the Pooh fans can enjoy dolls of Pooh (2,800 yen), Piglet, Eeyore, and Roo (1,500 yen) donning "Year of the Rat" costumes.
There is also a Mickey Mouse-motif kadomatsu (1,500 yen), a decoration made from bamboo and pine sprigs set outside Japanese households to welcome in healthy harvest and blessings.
There are also decorative gold curtain "mascot" stands of Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Chip and Dale, and a Toy Story Alien (1,000 yen).
The Eto Disney 2020 series of New Year decorations is currently available from the Japanese Disney Store online and retail stores throughout Japan.
