A season for tea
May is a time of renewal and fresh beginnings for green tea. It's when shincha 新茶 (new tea), tea made of young tea leaves from the first harvest is finally delivered to tea shops and tea purveyors. It's also a good excuse for sweet shops to sell new products featuring green tea and matcha.
Japan's Mister Donut got a head start on the season last month, when it launched a special collaboration with Uji matcha specialists Gion Tsujiri and sweets brand Toshi Yoroizuka. This initial offering was called the Pinnacle of Matcha 抹茶の、頂き (Matcha no itadaki), and featured six variations of matcha doughnut, meticulously crafted with a range of delicious combinations of flavors, such as chocolate and tiramisu.
The luxurious collab makes a surprise comeback
Now, in a new series called the Surprise of Matcha 抹茶の、驚き (Matcha no odoroki), Mister Donuts is back with two new variations on its popular "Pon de Ring" donut shape and two new variations of their chocolate pie.
