Studio Ghibli has a whole pantheon of iconic characters, beloved across the world. They have plucky heroes and heroines, and wise wizards and witches, but there’s also some more strange beings which have captured the imagination of anime fans.
Take for example ‘susuwatari’, which appear in both My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. These odd little creatures are super popular, and have even inspired a new magical accessory line.
Susuwatari, sometimes translated as soot sprites, black soots, or dust bunnies, are beings created by Hayao Miyazaki, which are small, black and fuzzy. In Spirited Away they’re fed konpeito, a type of star-shaped Japanese sweet. These konpeito are brightly coloured, and also feature in this accessory lineup to make the perfect contrast to the jet black soot sprites.
There’s six items to choose from including jewellery and hair accessories.
The dangly earrings have an adorable soot sprite hanging at the bottom of the gold-coloured chain (1760 yen).
And they’re even available for unpierced ears (1760 yen).
The necklace has a single soot sprite with a konpeito on either side in blue and green (1540 yen).
Konpeito and susuwatari rings are also available because if you liked it then you should have put a soot sprite on it (1320 yen).
The bracelet is made up of all four konpeito colours and three soot sprites, with an extra cute star charm by the fastener (2200 yen).
And lastly, you can bring these magical beings to your hairstyle with a hair pin set (1100 yen).
The products are available in Donguri Republic stores all over Japan (shop list available on official website), or through their online shop towards the end of April 2021.
