If you’re missing that crunch factor that crisps (‘chips’ for my American English speakers) in Japan don’t seem to have, you needn’t look much further than the snack aisle in your nearest convenience store, where sure enough you’re bound to find a pot of Jagarico.
These famous potato sticks are fried and packed into a cup made for sharing. Coming in a multitude of flavours, each bite of the easy-to-eat snack is somehow light and airy, but also accompanied by a very satisfactory crunch.
From 10 May 2021 a new flavour – ‘ガリバタ®醤油味’ (Garlic Butter Soy Sauce) – will be added to the Jagarico snack lineup for a limited time period in convenience stores across Japan. The snack will then be available in supermarkets and other stores from 24 May 2021.
This time fried a well-balanced flavour has been created by kneading fried garlic chips into the potato snack batter, before frying them in mellow butter and soy sauce. As with any Jagarico snack, the Jagarico Garlic Butter Soy sauce flavor snacks are crispy from the first bite through to the last.
The packaging of the new flavour is designed to stand out on the snack aisle shelf and features an image of garlic butter soy sauce flavoured potato wedges alongside pop illustrations and a Jagarico giraffe mascot in a spacesuit.

The new flavour was developed through a project run by the ‘Jagarico School’, and involved Jagarico fans working alongside the potato snack company on the video game ‘Animal Crossing: New Leaf’. In the game, a special event which ended in March saw fans and Calbee team up to develop new flavours for the stick-shaped potato snack. Overall, 13 new limited edition flavours were created through the collaboration, such as ‘carbonara flavour’, ‘karaage fried chicken flavour’, ‘honey butter flavour’ and ‘grilled mentaiko flavour’.
