Since it launched in September 2017, Cover Corporation's VTuber agency hololive productions has steadily increased its fan base. As of June 2021, the total number of YouTube channel subscribers has exceeded 40 million, a number which couldn't have been possible without the support of fans, not only in Japan but also overseas, especially in English-speaking and Asian countries.
As hololive production's English-language branch, hololive English debuted in September 2020 with Ninomae Ina’nis, Takanashi Kiara, Watson Amelia, Mori Calliope, and Gawr Gura as members of their first group called "hololive English - Myth." As many of our readers know, we've followed their progress and had the honor of interviewing their producer earlier this year.
Although all five members currently have over a million YouTube subscribers, one Vtuber among them has consistently been the first to achieve subscriber milestones: Gawr Gura.
Less than a month and a half after her debut, on October 22nd, she was the first Vtuber in hololive productions to break the 1 million mark, and then on January 17th, 2021, she became the first hololive Vtuber to break the 2 million mark.
On June 30th, 2021, Gawr Gura became the first Vtuber in the world to surpass 3 million subscribers. (While the sum of the subscriber numbers for Kizuna A.I.'s two channels A.I.Channel and A.I.Games is currently greater, Gawr Gura is the first Vtuber to reach the 3 million mark with a single channel).
In a press release, hololive productions thanked all the fans for their support, and ensured them that "they will continue to devote themselves to creating content that will be loved worldwide."
Gawr Gura continues to expand her fanbase with her entertaining content as well as her singing talent. On June 21st, she released her first original song, "REFLECT" which has been viewed over 5 million times at the time of writing.
