Mister Donut’s sweet potato doughnuts return for comforting mitsu-imo autumn lineup in Japan
Japan’s doughnut chain Mister Donut have plenty of exciting and tasty creations on offer throughout the year. This includes seasonal treats for events like Halloween, and even doughnuts inspired by traditional Japanese sweets.
But their most elaborate and luxurious releases come about when they collaborate with Gion Tsujiri, a famous green tea specialist store.
These limited-time only drops are popular with matcha lovers every time, but the collection released this month has another surprise in store. For the first time, they are also releasing hojicha doughnuts alongside their matcha ones. Hojicha is roasted green tea, which is known for its reddish-brown colour and toasty flavour.
The lineup consists of four doughnuts with two matcha and two hojicha.
First up is the ‘Nama Pon de Ring Uji Matcha’ which is made with Mister Donut’s classic ‘Pon de Ring Nama’ dough (which has a springy, mochi-like texture) combined with matcha powder. The doughnut is finished off with a glaze coating.
The second matcha treat is the ‘Nama Pon de Ring Uji Matcha Kuromitsu Kinako’. It’s similar to the first option but it’s covered in kinako (roasted soy bean powder) and comes with a kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) pouring sauce, two flavours often used in traditional Japanese sweets.
One of the hojicha creations also takes inspiration from Japanese sweets. The ‘Uji Hojicha Mochi Fuwa Warabi Mochi’ is made from a fluffy doughnut with Uji hojicha kneaded into the dough. The filling is made from red beans sourced from Hokkaido and warabi mochi. Lastly, it’s decorated with white chocolate and hojicha chocolate.
For the ‘Uji Hojicha Mochi Fuwa Whip’, Mister Donut have used the same hojicha dough and filled the sandwich with hojicha whipped cream, chocolate, and hojicha syrup. It’s topped with white chocolate and edible glitter.
If you’re feeling extra fancy you can get a takeout set featuring all four and get a specially designed paper bag.
These luxurious offerings will be around until late April in branches of Mister Donut all over Japan.
