Hoshino Coffee is a popular chain coffee shop in Japan known for its antique style interior decors and chic design. Their café menu is also popular along with their lunch.
One of their most popular dessert menus is “Kama yaki (Kiln roasted) souffle pancake”. Having heard rave reviews about their souffle pancakes and French toast, we just had to give them a try and report on them!
In recent years, thicker, fluffy pancakes have been gaining popularity in Japan as opposed to old fashioned, thinly prepared pancakes.
Hoshino Coffee’s soufflé pancake is literally like soufflé; fluffy, soft and smooth textured.

The single pancake order is 500-yen, tax included. Even double stacked pancakes are reasonably priced at 780-yen, tax included./
You can choose your favorite syrup from the three types; maple, honey, and brown sugar.
Needless to say, we had to go for the double stacked! We picked maple syrup for our topping.

The first bite definitely gave us a good impression and let us know why the chain is so beloved. The pancake offers two layered textures; crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside.

You can really taste the eggs, and it matched quite well with the maple syrup! The sweetness was not overwhelming, either.
Each pancake was quite thick, so we thought the double-stack might prove to be a bit too overwhelming, but the delicious taste carried us through.
Even better than the pancakes? We hear the French toast was just as popular if not more.
Their French toast (700 yen with tax) is quite loaded.

The bite size pieces of bread look so juicy and soaked with huge egg flavor.

The surface is nicely browned creating crunchy texture along with the sliced almond toppings. It was a great contrast with the soft texture of French toast.
The whipped cream was so soft but not overwhelmingly sweet either, which created a really nicely balanced dessert.
It’s no wonder the dish is a fan favorite.
We have tried many different items from lunch menu to dessert at Hoshino Coffee. If we were to pick ones to recommend, we’d say that Kama yaki souffle pancake and French toast are musts
Also as a bonus, we also recommend “Showa pudding” for 500 yen (including tax)!

This is an old-fashioned, firm textured pudding with a "nostalgic" Show era flavor. Add whipped cream or caramel sauce on top to customize to your liking!
