Homemade mochi can be a real treat, and if you use some simple tricks you can whip up some super delicious gourmet milk mochi.
Japanese Twitter user Asakawa (@deep_ocean_walk) was attempting to do just that using some cocoa chocolate milk. A batch of rich and creamy milk chocolate mochi certainly sounds like a fantastic summer dessert--it just may not always look like it.
Asakawa took a gamble on the milk they selected, and their milk chocolate mochi batch ended up looking a lot more frightening than they intended it to...
"I made some mochi with cocoa chocolate milk that was close to expiration date! Huh...? Entrails?"

What should have been a delicious bowl of mochi bites seems to have had its appearance completely altered by the not-so-fresh milk! Asakawa likened their appearance to liver or offal dishes. People in the replies had so much fun comparing the slimy aesthetic of the would-be mochi that Asakawa compiled a list of them on their blog:
Cthulhu
Baby rats
The contents of the Baker family's hot pot in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Leeches
What Will throws up in Stranger Things
Parasites
Prairie oysters
Snake food
Baby aliens
Since the milk wasn't actually spoiled, Asakawa stayed strong and actually did eat the transformed mochi, saying that despite the appearance, they were mildly sweet and delicious. It just goes to show you that the date on the milk carton can make a big difference.
