Pit bulls have a reputation for being a dangerous, aggressive breed. And perhaps as one of the consequences of this reputation, of the approximately 1.2 million dogs that are euthanized every year in the United States, pit bulls represent a large percentage.
But pit bulls are not all vicious, and are actually very loyal animals.
Photographer Sophie Gamand has decided to change negative perceptions of pit bulls in her ongoing series, ‘Flower Power: Pit Bulls of the Revolution.’
The project took off in summer of 2014, and since then she has photographed over 150 pit bulls in shelters across America, with 114 having been adopted so far. All the pit bulls are adorned with homemade flower crowns Gamand takes with her to various shelters where she takes pictures of dogs who are still waiting for adoption.
The flower crowns are used to ‘infuse a softer energy into their imagery,’ and to ‘challenge the way we look at pit bulls, and ultimately the way we treat them.’ By portraying these dogs in softer, more feminine images, Gamand hopes to break down the false perceptions that all pit bulls being ferocious creatures.
