Desperate times call for desperate measures, and in this case--a whole lot of time playing around with a spreadsheet!
Japanese twitter user yamatojiline103 posted the following Tweet recently (which has become wildly popular) spelling out a drawing dilemma he had:
Which translates to "I want to draw a picture on my computer. But I don't have the money to buy software. I guess I'll just do it on Excel."
That's right, Yamatojiline, who appears to be a big train fan and self-described "person who draws pictures on Excel" used an Excel spreadsheet as an alternative method to draw the picture. The tweet provides a look at his work during an unfinished stage and the final project.

After noticing it's popularity, he uploaded a video tutorial of him doing it again! Unfortunately you need registration and login information to see it, but the below Tweet is a preview of his second attempt. What's more, he finished it in under thirty minutes.
Yamatojiline definitely took the hard route, but that makes his work all the more impressive. Now imagine if he had actually tried it on Paint...or scrounged up the money for software!
