The art of paper cutting requires an astounding amount of patience, and it’s safe to say that Japanese artist Mr. Riu has that part of the creative process down pat. All cut by hand with one craft knife, Mr. Riu’s painstakingly intricate works mainly feature breathtaking mandalas and zentangle patterns, but also people and popular characters. Some are colored, some contain stories within the piece, and all are masterpieces of the kind we've always dreamed of having on our walls.
Even through the videos he posts on his Instagram, Mr. Riu makes paper cutting look so effortless. Obviously, as the final results can account for, they’re not. But the talented artist does offer a few bits of advice when delving into this delicate art form. According to him, one of the most important things for paper cutting is the thickness of paper as opposed to its quality or brand, and when you’ve finally made your incision with knife in hand, “don’t stop in the middle.”
Mr. Riu also shares that the details of his artwork isn’t possible because he is a patient person, but rather that he strives to work on his patience because he simply wants to see his projects to the end. And through it all, he writes that his captivating works will one day guide his own family, as well as everyone else in the world, toward peace on earth.
