Much like Kit Kats, Japanese potato chips tend to embrace seasonal and limited-time-only (期間限定) flavors, which often result in adventurous flavors such as Sukiyaki Pringles, milk and toast chips, and the uh....problematic blackface potato chip. Japanese Doritos lead the way in the "weird flavor" chip march, however, having released unusual salami, Caesar Salad, and shrimp mayonnaise flavors--to name a few. Their latest effort taps into what has become one of the world's most beloved hot sauces, however, as Frito Lay Japan released Sriracha-flavored Doritos this month.

Japan might not exactly be the country you thought would incorporate the popular spicy rooster sauce into a Doritos release, but Sriracha has been picking up steam in the country lately thanks to collaborations and promotions by Sriracha Japan. While many doubt the heat of Japanese commercial snacks, as spice lovers we just had to find out.

At the very base, you'll probably notice what can, somewhat lackingly on our part, be described as the universal "Doritos" tortilla chip taste, but the chips are seasoned with a Sriracha based powder along with garlic and chili pepper seasoning. At first bite, it seems a bit like your standard spicy Dorito chip, but gradually progresses into the sweet and heat nostalgic flavor of Sriracha.
While these aren't chip-per-chip heavyweight spice contenders, the heavy coat of seasoning definitely creeps into a spice level that will satisfy Sriracha fans looking for a crunchy medium. Japanese potato chip bags are often noted for their more than liberal serving of space, but 65 grams of Sriracha Doritos feels like the perfect serving--and as Frito Lay suggests, they go great with booze.

They are currently available at Japanese convenience stores (we can only confirm that they are sold at Lawson, given a lack of a press release), for just 145 yen. For those not in Japan, you're best bet is looking at a secondhand seller like Napa Japan, and keeping updated on when they restock.
