Is Japan’s shaved ice miso ramen the kakigori crossover summer treat we’ve always needed?
Who says that shaved ice season has to end in August? Just like ice cream fans who enjoy their iced treat all year long, there are aficionados of Japanese shaved ice, or kakigōri かき氷 who seek out the frozen dessert no matter what time of year it may be.
We've already seen fall versions of kakigōri which use the fruits of the season, for example, such as this white miso-cheese and fig sauce version at tea stand Hachiya.
However, fall is also a season for nutty, sweet, roasted and toasted flavors like chestnuts, kinako (roasted soybean flour), and salted caramel nut crunch. If those sound like delightful flavors you'd like to enjoy in a kakigōri dish, then head over to Floresta in the Koenji neighborhood of Tokyo this fall.
Floresta Koenji's Aki-Gōri fall kakigōri lineup
If the name Floresta sounds familiar, you may have read articles in grape Japan introducing their products in a different context. They're a Japanese chain that specializes in organic doughnuts and became known for their adorable animal-shaped creations such as Hello Kitty and Pompompurin.
However, they're not a one-trick pony and their creativity isn't limited to doughnuts. Case in point, they're now offering a line of kakigōri featuring some of the best organic ingredients from their fall doughnut collection and others.
