This charming cat cafe in Tokyo looks like it could be the setting for a Studio Ghibli film.
For as many cat cafes as Japan has, there is certainly no shortage of variety. Feline fans can enjoy cat cafes on trains, cosplay cat cafes, rescue cat cafes that offer adoption services, and even a cat cafe where the kitty staff occasionally cosplays. (And if you prefer dogs, the mini-Shiba Inu cafe is a must.)
It's probably no coincidence that Kichijouji Petit Mura is located in the same neighborhood as the official Studio Ghibli Museum, as the theme-parkesque village area houses a magical castle called the Temari no Oshiro that would be right at home in a fantastical Hayao Miyazaki film about cats. The cafe's exterior and interior decor (which is so rooted in a fantasy world it might be a bit cramped for some customers) is sure to be a hit with both cat lovers and Studio Ghibli fans.
Of course, while the fairy tale aesthetic helps the cafe stand out as a spot to play with cats and enjoy a relaxing beverage before heading over to the Studio Ghibli Museum or enjoying the many fascinating sights, sounds, and flavors of Kichijouji, the main attraction is the kitty staff, who are all more than happy to hang out with you, enjoy treats you can hand-feed them (provided by the cafe), and cozy up in comfortable crawl spaces.
Access information can be found at the Petit Mura and Temari no Oshiro official websites. Entry is 1,200 yen on weekdays, and 1,600 yen on weekends and holidays. The nighttime entrance fee (7:00 PM and after) is only 700 yen, however! Many of the human staff can speak English, so definitely consider it as a pit stop to play with cats and double your Ghibli nostalgia for the day.
