Wagashi is a term that refers to various traditional sweets and desserts. Distinctly Japanese ingredients and flavours are used such as matcha, adzuki beans and kinako (roasted soy bean flour), making them completely different from their counterparts found in other countries.

They are often eaten as an accompaniment to green tea and seen in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.

But these traditional treats aren’t immune to modern updates, and from time to time character themed wagashi come along.

Previously there were Rilakkuma sweets and even wagashi versions of the aliens from Toy Story.

These latest ones are being sold at Japanese convenience store, Lawson and take the form of round, pink video game hero, Kirby.

The sweets are described as ‘mochi mochi’, meaning they will be chewy and soft.

Two characters are available, Kirby, filled with custard flavour cream and Waddle Dee who is filled with caramel flavour cream.

There will be four different adorable facial expressions available, including a mystery one.

Mochi mochi Kirby and Waddle Dee will go on sale from 20th November 2018 in Lawson stores.
