The Japanese art style of bijinga (美人画, "beautiful person picture") is typically observed as artwork of beautiful women popular as ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Bijinga often don't simply depict beautiful women, but an inner grace and and appeal found in their daily activities, surroundings, and clothing. Today, the traditional lineage of bijinga remains, but young artists such as Kazuho Imaoka have transformed the style with a modern flourish. In the case of Imaoka, one of those modern additions is of the feline variety, as she has a reputation for beautifully depicting women with cat companions.

The Osaka-born Imaoka studied at the Seian University of Art and Design, and her artwork gives a modern touch to many of the classic traits found in bijinga--beautifully designed kimono patterns, textile backgrounds, and traditional Japanese flowers. Her artist profile for an ongoing exhibition at Ginza Tsutaya Books (running until January 13th, 2020), Imaoka's work is the tradition of her hometown and an exploration of the connections between where the old and present mix.
