"Gunpla" (a portmanteau of "Gundam" and "plastic model") refers to the Mobile Suit Gundam hobbyist model and figure kits manufactured by Bandai, and the company has decided to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the popular kits in Japan in a very grand way.
This December Premium Bandai will be releasing a luxurious and high quality "Gundarium alloy" RX-78-2 Gundam Gunpla--one that clocks in at 220,000 yen ($2,049.95 USD)!
If you're wondering for the reasoning behind the extravagant price, it's because the celebratory model was made with the intent of recreating the Gundarium used to construct the RX-78-2 Gundam in the iconic anime series. However, since lightweight alloy refined on the surface of the moon is quite hard to get these days, Bandai turned to Metal Injection Molding, a metal working process that combines uses high pressure injection for finely powdered metals.
The impressive but pricey Gundam comes with a stand engraved with the logo of the Earth Federation forces, and of course, the finely detailed plastic bits Gunpla fans have come to expect.
Reservations for the 1/144th scale model are currently available at Premium Bandai, with shipping expected in December 2020.
