They say look after the pennies, and the pounds will look after themselves. But if you need some extra help guarding your pennies, you can always enlist the help of No-Face from Spirited Away (also known as Kaonashi), thanks to this awesome Studio Ghibli money box.
The animated coin guardian first appeared at Japan’s Studio Ghibli merchandise wonderland Donguri Kyowakoku several years ago in 2017, and the idea captured the imaginations of scores of anime fans, and promptly sold old.
Now the store have announced a comeback for the popular product, and it is currently restocked in both the company’s on and offline stores.
Although he’s known more for giving out gold in the movie, this Kaonashi piggy bank greedily gobbles up coins for himself.
The plate the character is holding is modelled on the red bowl that No-Face gorges himself from in the movie. If you want him to look after your money for you, you simply have to pile your coins on his plate until it reaches the set weight to trigger the automation (about 30g). The reticent spirit then reveals a gaping mouth below his mysterious mask and eats up any coins on the plate, gold or otherwise.
As he devours your tasty earnings, the money box also plays music from the film, as Kaonashi emits a satisfied ‘ahhh’ and a burp sound at the end. At 4800 yen it seems like a solid investment, since you won’t be able to stop saving your money.
And for Spirited Away super fans, Donguri Kyowakoku have also announced brand new merchandise featuring the beloved characters, including a hand towel, a Japanese-style teacup, and gorgeous embroidered brooches.
The products are available in Donguri Kyowakoku stores all over Japan (shop list available on official website), or through their online shop.
