Taiyaki are one of Japan's favorite traditional sweets and street food. The fish-shaped pastries (specifically sea bream-shaped) actually don't have any fish flavor or ingredients, but are cakes usually filed with red bean paste--although nowadays there are a variety of flavors including custard, berry, and chocolate.
It may sound strange, but SEGA actually sells taiyaki, and are quite creative with it too, having recently released melted cheese and corned beef taiyaki. After a coronavirus break, SEGA is releasing a new taiyaki shaped like their flagship character Sonic the Hedgehog, and they are chili cheese dog flavored! Which makes sense, since that's the speedy mascot's favorite food.
The taiyaki are shaped like Sonic and feature the franchise logo on the back.
The taiyaki themselves are 300 yen, but the SEGA taiyaki shops will also be selling Sonic the Hedgehog pin badges as well for 350 yen.
Both the Sonic chili cheese dog taiyaki and badges will be on sale at the Ikebukuro and Akihabara SEGA taiyaki shops starting June 26th.
