A generous surprise

As we reported earlier, Studio Ghibli surprised and delighted anime fans around the world one month ago when it announced that it was making 400 stills from its beloved films available for anyone to use free of charge "within the limits of common sense."

Fans were overjoyed to have high-quality images from When Marnie Was There, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Spirited Away, The Wind Rises, From Up On Poppy Hill, The Secret World of Arrietty, Ponyo, and Tales from Earthsea at their disposal. The move generated a flurry of activity on social media as people began to share the images in various ways, for example focusing on scenes featuring delicious-looking food, or using them in memes about life as a homemaker.

In its original announcement, Studio Ghibli promised images from more films would be released but did not specify when that might happen, leaving many wondering if they would be waiting for many months.

However, on October 16th, exactly four weeks later, the studio released its second round, with an additional 300 images from six more films!
