It was only just recently that Universal Studios Japan announced a number of intriguing details regarding the opening and featured attractions of "Super Nintendo World", a large scale area of the park dedicated to the popular worlds and characters from Nintendo overseen by Nintendo staff and Shigeru Miyamoto himself.
The Osaka-based theme park is now ramping up the excitement. Last month some impressive footage show that the nearly completed area looks almost like a video game come to life, and the park has also announced an official opening date and given us a look at its star attraction--a Mario Kart ride, which will open up on February 4th, 2021.
Inside an intimidating large scale replication of Bowser's Castle, fans can ride the "Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge" attraction, which sees guests wear AR-equipped helmets that recreate racing through the world of Mario Kart through cutting edge projection mapping, with the ability to fire off items to repel enemies. Of special note is that the attraction isn't a one-time experience, and has multiple results based on performance.
A Yoshi's Adventure ride sees visitors hang onto Yoshi as you search for Toad and three mysterious eggs in a treasure hunt.
The park will also feature Power Up Band Key Challenges via a "Power Up Band" you can rent to use in park to earn coins, stars, digital stamps, and compete on a leaderboard by hitting question mark blocks tracked by a smartphone app. The app also appears to let you use your own movements to explore the park as a your own in game character. One such event features a boss battle against Bowser Jr., who has stolen the Golden Mushroom.
Here's a demonstration of the band used on a block previously shown by Bloomberg.
