‘Wagashi’ is a term that refers to all different types of traditional Japanese sweets. These treats are known not just for their flavour, but also their beautiful presentation.
Apart from the more traditional stylings, sweet lovers can also get wagashi inspired by various characters from popular culture. A sweets maker known for this type of treat is ‘Tabemasu’, a company that recreates all kinds of famous characters in traditional Japanese sweet form. Not only are these wagashi tasty, they are also made in impressive detail. Sometimes they even add some seasonal flair for occasions such as Valentine’s Day and Christmas.
For the upcoming cherry blossom season, they have revealed an adorable duo of characters with a sakura theme. The characters chosen are Shirokuma and Tokage from Sumikko Gurashi.
Shirokuma has a stawberry flavour filling and holds a cherry blossom flower in his hands.
Tokage has a custard flavoured filling and is wearing a charming blossom crown.
The type of Japanese sweet used to create these offerings is nerikiri. Nerikiri is a type of wagashi which can be easily coloured and moulded, lending itself perfectly to the creation of super detailed characters.
This adorable two-set can currently be found in branches of Aeon and Aeon Style around Japan (excluding Okinawa).
