As this year is the 25th anniversary of Pixar’s Toy Story, the first ever fully CG animated film, there’s a few events going on in Japan to celebrate the movie studio’s beloved characters. For one, starting from September a Pixar themed bullet train will be speeding through south Japan to the delight of nostalgic movie fans and kids alike.
Another celebration which will be starting later this month is the ‘Pixar Fest’ pop-up cafe which will be opening in three major Japanese cities, Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
With the concept of ‘keep on smiling!’, the extensive menu showcasing various recognisable characters and motifs from Pixar’s animations over the years, will definitely appeal to those on a nostalgia kick.
A stand out Pixar motif is the Pixar Ball, also known as the Luxo Ball, which first appeared in the Luxo, Jr. short film and has made many memorable cameos in the studio’s other animations like Toy Story. It also appears in the pop-up cafes as a particularly colourful bread roll, which can be even purchased along with an original commemorative plate.
A tortilla sandwich bursting with sea critters represents the Finding Nemo franchise.
Toy Story’s toy box has been cleverly and tastily recreated as a bread filled with cream stew.
Of course the menu wouldn’t be complete without a ‘ratatouille’-style dish inspired by Remy’s culinary specialty.
The interestingly coloured spaghetti is for Monsters Inc. fans, featuring both Sully and Mike.
There’s themed drinks on offer too, referencing various Pixar hit movies.
Even within a pop up cafe, there’s yet another temporary event going down from 10th October to 24th November, the Lotso Strawberry Fair, which will bring with it a ton of fruity treats featuring the bear from Toy Story 3.
The cafes will appear in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya on different dates. Reservations can be made online, where you can also find the full menu with prices.
