This ice cream is チョコモナカジャンボ choko monaka janbo “Choco Monaka Jumbo” by Morinaga & Co., Ltd. and it's been a favorite with kids young and old for half a century!

Originally a traditional Japanese confectionary, 最中 monaka has sweet red bean paste sandwiched between two soft wafers. However, in this product, the red bean paste filling has turned into vanilla ice cream and a bar of milk chocolate.

The mixed texture of the soft wafers, the crispy chocolate, and the rich ice cream is surprisingly good! You can tell how delicious it is just from the picture!

On August 2nd, a special pouch and mook will be released to celebrate the popular ice cream monaka’s 50th anniversary.

The design of the outer bag comes in two types. The first version is “Choco Monaka Jumbo Porch Book” チョコモナカジャンボ ポーチBOOK. This version is available at book stores in towns and online book stores. The price is JPY 2,629 (tax included) comes with a pouch that is a replica of the packaging.

This book and package pouch come with the monaka pouch.

The pouch is also available in another version, “Choco Monaka Jumbo Pouch BOOK special package ver.” チョコモナカジャンボ ポーチBOOK special package ver.

This is available at Lawson, HMV, HMV & BOOKS online. It is JPY 2,189 (tax included). The special package is transparent like this.

This cute charm is included with both versions. What a deal! It’s also removable.

More about Choco Monaka Jumbo

Morinaga started selling the original chocolate monaka ice cream, but this version didn’t have the chocolate bar in the middle of vanilla ice cream yet. In 1996, they began inserting chocolate into the middle, and it became the Choco Monaka Jumbo we know today. According to the book, sales have increased for 20 years in a row since 2001.

Unlike normal ice cream, this ice cream has a monaka-like shell. So, believe it or not, Morinaga says that if you toast it for 30 seconds with a toaster, it will taste even better!
