Studio Ghibli adds Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and more to its free image gallery
Here at grape Japan, we've had a few opportunities to introduce cosplay and cosplay outfits inspired by Studio Ghibli's films. For example, there was this amazing outfit for San and a life-sized Yakul from Princess Mononoke and even a dog cosplaying as No-Face from Spirited Away.
For fans without any cosplay experience, however, it's easier to cosplay characters from films in which costumes aren't so elaborate. A good example is Kiki's Delivery Service. Kiki's relatively simple outfit has even inspired an official Studio Ghibli fashion line.
On August 3rd, 2022, Japanese comedian and actor なだぎ武 Takashi Nadagi, whom some of our tokusatsu-loving readers might recognize as senior detective Mikio Jinnai in Kamen Rider W, posted photos of him together with his wife, stage actress 渡邊安理 Anri Watanabe, in an excellent cosplay inspired by the film.
Already in March, Nadagi had announced his wife's pregnancy on his Instagram account, posting a photo in the Asahi TV studio from when the couple were guests in the long-running newlywed's talk show 新婚さんいらっしゃい Shinkon-san Irasshai:
Five months later, with Watanabe becoming much more visibly pregnant, the couple, who are both fans of Kiki's Delivery Service, had a genius idea to commemorate this special moment in their lives: Watanabe would cosplay as Osono, who is also very pregnant in the film, and Nadagi would cosplay as her husband Fukuo. As fans surely know, we're talking about the couple who run the bakery Gütiokipänjä where Kiki operates her delivery service from.
Take a look at these amazing photos, which were the result!
Nadagi captioned the photo saying "I took maternity photos of my wife the other day. I'm sorry that I ended up having so much fun." Since both of them are actors, it was easy for them to get into their roles, and you can tell that they had a lot of fun with it. The photos are filled with humor and happiness. Nadagi's comedic sense shines in the second photo in which he stares at Osono's bulging belly.
On July 31st, Nadagi posted two more images from the photo shoot, showing them really getting into their roles. It's amazing how well they look the part. Not only did they nail the outfits, but they even have the props with delicious looking loaves of bread.
"I took some photos that I could only take at this very moment. I am grateful to my wife for going along with it."
The Tweet went viral, garnering nearly 270,000 likes and over 42,000 retweets at the time of writing.
In a follow-up Tweet on August 3rd, Nadagi couldn't hide his joy and surprise, saying "I didn't think I would get this much of a response (...) I'd also like to report after the baby is born... Thank you. I'm very grateful."
Maybe once the baby is born, they can cosplay the scene shown in the film's ending credits where we see the couple picnicking on a grassy hill, Fukuo seated while feeding a milk bottle to their newborn baby while Osono is standing and looking happily in the distance, presumably at Kiki flying on her broomstick and Tombo in his plane.
