There's definitely been some interesting flavors of Coca-Cola in Japan, with strawberry, peach, and apple Coke leading the charge. The latest flavor of Coca-Cola in Japan might raise quite a few eyebrows for those uninitiated with anime, however. That's because new newest Coca-Cola in Japan is Bleach flavored!

Of course, it's not that kind of bleach. The new entry in the Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is a collaborative release with popular anime and manga series Bleach, and is being sold as a celebration of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. It's called Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Soul Blast, and as the label tells you, it packs "Action Flavor." Cans of the new anime-themed Coke were initially only sold at a pop-up store, but now that they've hit convenience stores around the country, we just had to pick up some to see if this Bankai in the form of Coke really "awakens the strongest version of yourself" as the can says!

Bleach protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki is featured on a fittingly orange can, and while it would be easy to assume the collaboration ends at the label, the promise of an "Action Flavor" and a name like Soul Blast had us thinking different.
We poured it into a glass, and were only a little surprised to see that the Coke isn't orange, but the standard Coca-Cola color. We were struck by an immediate but subtle aroma of citrus and vanilla, however.

No crazy Coca-Cola Bankai...yet.

So how did it taste? As it turns out, the new Bleach Coke does have a different flavor from your standard Coca-Cola. As a Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, the sweetness is rather lacking, but what was surprised us was how minimized the actual cola flavor seemed was compared to the standard Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. While it absolutely retains that Coke flavor, its much less subdued and spiked by the citrusy vanilla aftertaste that caught our nose earlier.
So while the "Action Flavor" may not be for those crazing a strong cola flavor, it should definitely do for those who are fans of Vanilla Coke, tropical flavors, or those looking for a really cool Bleach themed can!
