When traveling abroad, it's always a good idea to sample as much of what you can't get back in your home country, particularly when it comes to food and drink. In Japan, that can sometimes mean taking in worldwide brands with a slight twist, such as alcoholic Coca-Cola or the world's first Ruby chocolate Kit Kat. Pepsi in Japan is no different, having released limited edition flavors such as sakura, Christmas Cake, and event salted watermelon in the past. Now Suntory is releasing a new Pepsi with a remade formula specifically targeting the Japanese market.

Called "Pepsi J-Cola", the newly released version of Pepsi was put together after Suntory got feedback from a survey from over one hundred Pepsi-lovers, and specifically caters to "heavy users", or heavy drinkers of Pepsi, a Suntory press release said. The new formula makes use of original Japanese spices and citrus, and to drive home the Japanese exclusivity, the label is adorned with a print of The Great Wave off Kanagawa, perhaps the most famous woodblock print by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. Along with the standard J-Cola and Zero version, which is said to have a richer and deeper flavor with a refreshing aftertaste, there is also a special "Midnight flavor".

The Midnight variety was designed in response to feedback that said approximately half of those surveyed enjoyed cola at night, and has a cassis, or black currant, flavor which Suntory believes matches the evening time in both aesthetic, taste, and aroma.
