Japanese Twitter Celebrates Feline Goofiness With “Poorly Taken Photos Of Cats” Competition
‘Eggs are yummy… boiled, baked or raw. There are many ways to make an egg, but eggs are so lazy (gude gude in Japanese). Look closely and you will see the eggs that you eat lack spunk.’
This is the slightly questionable way the character Gudetama is introduced on Sanrio’s official website but it gets the point across. Gudetama is an egg who likes to laze around. Sanrio famously created Hello Kitty among other cute characters, and Gudetama’s charming lethargy has led to great popularity in Japan, spawning merchandise, pop-up cafes, and even his own public bath.
Now this lazy egg will grace the quintessential McDessert. From the 8th June the Gudetama McFlurry will be available in McDonalds all over Japan for a limited time only. McFlurry’s signature ice cream will be used and a topping consisting of two sauces.

At the moment the flavour remains a mystery. There’s a chance to guess the flavour before the product’s launch date as part of the ‘What Flavour is Gudetama?’ campaign, in which Twitter users are encouraged to tweet their predictions to the official McDonalds Japan account. One lucky winner chosen by a lottery can look forward to a golden prize Gudetama sparkling on their mantlepiece.

This isn’t the first time McDonalds Japan have used a character-inspired ice cream to orchestrate a Twitter campaign. Last summer they asked users to guess which Pokemon had been selected to appear in McFlurry form. (It was Pikachu of course.)

The usual McFlurry cups are also getting made over in honour of the fried layabout with six different designs.

If you have kids or are still a kid at heart, there will also be cute Gudetama goods included in Happy Meals.
So what flavour do you think Gudetama is? We're eggspecting something pretty eggstravagant...
