With it's new plant-based Whopper, all you can eat Whopper challenge, and Extreme One Pound Beef Burger, Burger King Japan sure has been busy this year.
They seem determined to end 2020 with a bang. To close out the year, Burger King Japan is releasing a new "Spicy Yakuyoke Whopper" that acts as a protective charm to ward off evil and has been blessed by the prayers of Buddhist monks.
"Yakuyoke" is a Japanese word that refers to the idea of something being apotropaic, or a protective talisman to ward off evil or misfortune. That makes this Whopper a timely release, as it is common during the Japanese New Year to visit temples to acquire a yakuyoke charm or prayer to cleanse and acquire some good luck for the coming year.
In a commercial for the new protective burger, you can watch the spicy Whopper as the spicy centerpiece of a yakuyoke blessing ceremony held at Jindaiji Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Tokyo, conducted by praying monks. Prayer boards and a ceremonial fire "flame grill" the Whopper to its apotropaic power.
The "spicy" in the Spicy Yakuyoke Whopper's name comes from its spicy garlic chips, which are slathered in a sauce using spicy powder made by Gion Ajiko in Kyoto. They call it the "Japan's spiciest golden pepper".
Each Spicy Yakuyoke Whopper comes with a complementary Yakuyoke mint meant to refresh and "cleanse" you after you down the hot burger.
The Spicy Yakuyoke Whopper is a particularly seasonal release, so it will only be available from December 25th-28th. If you're in Japan and looking for some good fortune for 2021 and some spice to get over 2020, this looks to be the Whopper for you.
