When it comes to the hot food section of Japanese convenience stores, you can make a pretty strong argument that Lawson's Karaage-kun is king. The nuggets of karaage (Japanese fried chicken) come in a wide variety of limited edition flavors, including garlic butter, ramen, and Final Fantasy Limited Break.
It was even recently certified as space food.

As you can see in a short commercial for the new "Loads of tartar sauce flavored Karaage-kun", the nuggets have a very simple but appetizing gimmick of stuffing the classic Karaage-kun with a healthy serving of smooth and creamy tartar sauce.
Opening up the package, which reminds you that the sauce is inside, we were greeted by golden brown and crispy sight of what appeared to be normal Karaage-kun nuggets, although they definitely felt a bit heavier when pricked and held up with the accompanying toothpick.

Biting into it, however, we found that the new record selling Karaage-kun does indeed live up to its name. The juicy nuggets (best served piping hot) provide the perfect contrast for the cool and flavorful burst of tartar sauce stored inside. In a way, it reminds us of a karaage version of the Miyazaki special chicken nanban, which is the basis for McDonald's new Ultraman burger.

While you may need to pick them up earlier in the day due to an apparent high demand, those in Japan looking for a crispy and saucy combo of karaage and tartar sauce will want to stop by Lawson's to pick up the new "Loads of tartar sauce flavored Karaage-kun".
